Joomla is an extremely powerful CMS system that I use on another site. The learning curve of Joomla, however, can be pretty steep. One of the things that many people neglect to do is backup their Joomla database. Again, as I always preach here, that is a huge mistake. You don’t want to cruise along for a year and then lose all your work! Keep in mind that you will want to backup your content via FTP so that a restore of your database doesn’t kick out a ton of errors if you have to reinstall. Here are some picks for backing up Joomla for free:
JomBackup - this is my personal favorite. I like it because it’s automated and because it emails me the compressed sql backup file.
Automated Cron Backup - this one is a little more complex since it uses cron. But it’s still a viable alternative if you can’t get JomBackup going.
Joomla!Pack - this is a whole site backup component. That’s great when you want to move a site. The only problem with this is that it’s not an automated backup. That means that you will forget about it - at least most people will.
BigApe - some people swear by this backup utility. BigApe can also create a backup of your entire Joomla filesystem. You can select which folders to include in the backup. It also shows backup sets which you can use for restoration.
Comments
BEWARE: Some backup components save archives with predictable filename like the date or site name and these are publically accessible in ./administrator/backups !!
Also BEWARE of the version of BigApe Backup you install - there is a serious security vulnerability in one of the versions - I’m not sure if its even fixed. (Not checked)
Phil, thanks for those comments! Yeah, housing backups on your server can be a risk. I always opt to house them off site because of that. And thanks for the BigApe heads up - I wasn’t aware of that security issue.
i love joomla..my first website using jooml..it’s easy to learn
please.
